Universal Design for Hammer

The Structure:

The structure of UNIHAMMER is rather simple. A steel piece that can withstand the force of a hammer is used to fasten the nail in position. Using a piston mechanism to raise it up and down, and the frames on both sides keeps it perpendicular. The user is able to hold the nail perpendicularly without having to place their fingers anywhere near the nail itself, reducing the risk of hammering himself.

  1. I like the design. It is functional and aesthetically pleasing. The question is,will users be willing to throw in their old traditional hammers? Using standard,'old school' tools such as hammers and screwdrivers is often part of the experience - I think the psychology and emotional attachment to traditions and habits might be too strong for this new tool. Albeit, perhaps, for novices. A slightly lighter, perhaps more simple version could be developed for female users. We did a survey on the female DIY market in 2008 and found that on average in the US, 80% of women will do at least one (minor or major) DIY job at home. We also found that women, in general, want tools that have a single function (So no multi-tools there) and found that in many cases women are afraid of using hammers for fear of injuring themselves.
